Performing Arts is an active part of West Kildonan Collegiate. Students can be found dancing, singing and creating many other forms of art from dawn till dusk! Students have the opportunity to participate in drama, dance, choir, band, and art as electives, and can join to the school production as an extra curricular activity! Each year, students come together at the end of the year to celebrate their achievements with the VPA Night. Students are invited to celebrate their growth as artists throughout the year.
There are over 100 singers involved in different ensembles at West K. This year, there were 6 different ensembles for students to participate in: Grade 9 Choir, Grade 10 Choir, Senior Choir, Vox Rox (Vocal Jazz), Vocal Verve (Vocal Jazz) and Colla Voce (Chamber Choir). Every ensemble participated in ChoralFest in November.
West K dance classes consist of learning techniques from hip hop, jazz, ballet, tap, and contemporary dance styles. We also include a “Folklarama Week” to explore a variety of cultural dance stlyes including Ukrainiun, Tinikling, Porteguese, Traditional Japanese dance, African, Irish, and Bollywood. We’ve recently been preparing for our upcoming recital where students showcase their group dances, as well as self-choreographed routines. Family, friends, and community members are all welcome to attend!
The band program consists of Grade 9 Band, Grade 10 Band, Senior Band, and 2 jazz bands. Students play in a variety of school and community events including the Optimist Festival. An exciting highlight of each year is the community play-a-long at the spring concert. It is great seeing current, and former students as well as various community members come to play together.
West K drama continues to grow. There are many drama classes happening, that help students grow and expand their knowledge of theatre and acting. Each year, students also have the opportunity to participate in a school production. This year, the school produced the musical Footloose in February.
The Art room is always a hive of activity. Students develop their skills in the fine arts. It is beautiful to see the work these students can create!
The arts at West K, strive to be a welcoming community that give students a place to belong, and excel. Students challenge themselves, and become masters of different art forms!
