Engineering on the Farm

Grade 12 Electronics/Topics in Science students Kenny Nguyen and Manmeet Maan were tasked with solving a problem on a local farm – Foodsmith Farms. Farmer Steve Smith needed a way to ensure the chickens in his chicken coop could be kept safe from predators when no one was on the premise to lock the coop door at dusk. Kenny and Manmeet came up with an automated chicken coop door controlled by electronic timers. Their design utilized an actuator to raise and lower the door, which was installed on drawer glides for a smooth opening/closing motion. The movement of the door was controlled by electronic timers and an electronic relay to reverse the actuator motor polarity. Check out the video and pics to see their excellent innovation and design.
